Season 2010/11

FIRST TEAM

Kent County League
Premier Division 3rd (promoted)
London Intermediate Cup Winners
Runners-up Bill Manlow Inter-Regional Challenge Cup

Willie O'Sullivan who started his second season as manager left in January 2011 with Steve Chapman stepping in to complete the season.

Pictured above is the team having won The London Intermediate Cup and finishing 3rd in the league. A re-structure saw the team promoted from the Kent County League (Step 7) to the Kent Hurlimann League (Step 5). The ever reliable Matt Knuckey * was top scorer again and Matt, Joe Matthews, Tom Martin, Jamie Miller and Luke Hewitt were all selected to play for the Kent County League's Representative's side. Ryan Fulljames a product of the youth team became the youngest player to appear in the first team at 16 years and 12 days old.

* Matt Knuckey 23 goals (21 league and 2 cup) as at 13/5/11 with one league game remaining - verified from match day programme for final game of the season away at Snodland, a 3-0 win for Cray Valley.

Prior to the step 5 announcement below, Steve Chapman's programme notes under club history as at April 2011 read:
'During 2008 we were delighted to finally gain victory in our long-running appeal with Greenwich Council for planning permission to redevelop Badgers Sports and erect floodlights. This means that once the required ground improvements are made, we can provide facilities that will enable us to play at a senior level in the Kent League - and beyond!
This season, despite having excellent cup runs in all of the competitions entered, the team has also been pushing for promotion and the battle with Canterbury and Phoenix Sports for a place in the Kent League. has been intriguing to say the least! In the event that we fail to win promotion we have been accepted as one of the 16 members of the new Step 6 Division in the new Kent Invicta League for the 2011/12 season"

Announcement made May 2011
Cray Valley to Step 5
"The FA Leagues Committee met yesterday and made some changes to club placements at Kent League (Step 5) and Kent Invicta League (Step 6) level.
The Safety Net Associates Kent League will welcome Cray Valley (PM), who have been moved from the Kent Invicta League, after Sporting Bengal were granted permission to transfer to the Essex Senior League for the coming season. "

The Kent Premier League has a total of 16 member clubs for this season with Canterbury City and Cray Valley PM joining the division. Norton Sports have been renamed Woodstock Sports for the 2010/11 season following due to relocation to The WEM stadium in Woodstock Park, Sittingbourne. The football pyramid in Kent will see a new league from 2010/11, with the Step 6 Kent Invicta League formed, which will see promotion and relegation to and from the Kent Premier Leaugue. The new league will in turn bridge the gap between the Premier League and the Kent County League. See full constitutions below.

Match Report from the Archives

Kent County League Premier Division - 11th September 2010
Lewisham Borough 2 (Sinclair 2) Cray Valley (PM) 4 (Matthews 2 pens, O'Sullivan, Hewitt)

Late goals from Callum O’Sullivan and Luke Hewitt sent Cray to the top of the table in an action packed game at Lewisham Borough’s temporary ground at Ten Em Bee Sports. Lewisham were forced to play the entire second half with 10 men as a result of Eden Blake’s sending off in the 44th minute but fought valiantly throughout and when Ashley-Paul Sinclair netted his second goal on 75 minutes it looked like they would clinch a draw. However, despite not being able to re-create the fine flowing football which saw Cray hit 7 in their last away game, the players dug deep to grind out the result.
With players returning from injury and their summer holiday’s there is much more competition for places and the only absentee from the squad was full back Ben Healy (on his summer break!). Manager Willie O’Sullivan welcomed back captain Paul Springett and striker Luke Hewitt to the starting line up whilst Myles Warren and Callum O’Sullivan dropped to the bench. After his encouraging home debut against Rusthall, Jack Baines retained his place in the side at left back and after impressing in his preferred centre midfield role Joe Bingham moved across to the right side of midfield. Another added bonus was the return of Paul Votier to the bench.
Cray has gone three and a half games without conceding a goal so when Lewisham took the lead after ten minutes it was certainly a shock to the system! Michael Munday did extremely well to make a goal saving tackle but unfortunately for Munday his fellow defenders were not as alert as him because from the next cross an unmarked Sinclair was able to steer the ball into the unguarded Cray goal. A soft goal to concede but early enough in the game to enable Cray the opportunity to recover. The match was played at a high tempoand at times challenges were fierce. Baines picked up a booking for a foul on former Cray player Phil McBean and McBean shortly returned the compliment to earn himself a caution.
Cray were unlucky not to draw level when keeper Steve Mattis produced a brilliant double save from Matt Knuckey and shortly after defender Griffiths cleared the ball off the goal line when Hewitt’s header looked goal bound. The game was turned on it’s head a minute before the break. Baines deep cross from the left eluded Mattis and fell to Knuckey but just as he was about to divert the ball into the empty net Blake tugged his shirt and the off balance Knuckey could only fire over the bar. The Referee had no choice but to red card Blake and award a penalty. Joe Matthews duly converted the spot kick for his first goal of the campaign. Straight from the re-start Lewisham were actually unlucky not to go in the break in the lead when the impressive Michael Brown hit the bar with a fine header.
It took only 10 minutes for Cray to take the lead after the restart. Bingham’s clever dummy on the edge of the box allowed the ball to run to Knuckey and his cross was judged to be handled. Another penalty and Matthews strolled up to confidently place the ball in the opposite corner to his earlier spot kick. However, instead of finishing the game off it was Lewisham who fought back and deservedly equalised in the 75th minute. Dominic Weston was given too much space on the left and his cross was headed home by Sinclair at the far post for his second of the match.
Much to Cray’s credit they continued to push for the winner and it was second half substitutes O’Sullivan and Votier that were involved in the goal that saw Cray re-take the lead. The ball appeared to be going out of play when Votier somehow managed to pull it back to Hewitt who unselfishly laid the ball back for O’Sullivan to calmly side-foot the ball home from 10 yards. With less than 5 minutes remaining, the relief on the Cray bench was more than evident!
Cray even managed to extend their lead in the last minure when Man of the Match Luke Hewitt, whose all round contribution was excellent, smashed home his 4th goal of the season off the post to seal the 3 points.
