BIG MATCH PREVIEW
WHITEHAWK v CRAY VALLEY (PM)
11th DEC 2021
PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE – SOUTH EAST DIVISION
By Richard J Green
Kevin Watson takes his Cray Valley side to the East Sussex coast on Saturday buoyed by their return to the top of the league table following last week’s victory over Herne Bay.
Watson will hope to have Nathan Green available to start having made an appearance as a substitute at the Artic Stadium, while Ade Adeyemo should be fit after suffering from cramp midway through the second half.
Hawks for their part come into the game on the back of a 3-0 win at Sevenoaks Town, following a run of three consecutive defeats.
Indeed, inconsistency would best sum up Whitehawk’s season to date following their 1-1 draw in Eltham on the season’s opening day.
Currently sitting in twelfth position with six wins and eight defeats from their sixteen league matches, Hawks have twice been seen languishing in the division’s bottom three – a far cry from early season aspirations.
After spending sixty plus years in local Sussex football, the last decade has been eventful for the Club to say the least.
Promoted to the Isthmian League South Division in 2009/10, Hawks were thwarted in the promotion playoffs the following season before back to back promotions saw them in the Conference/National League South in 2013/14.
Their first season at the higher level again saw them beaten in the playoffs – an extra time winner for Boreham Wood denying the Club a fourth promotion in five years !!
FA Cup exploits gave the Club national TV exposure before relegation back to the Isthmian League in 2017/18 was repeated the following season as Whitehawk took their place back in the South East Division.
After appearing among the promotion contenders when the 2019/20 season ended, a poor start to the 2020-21 season saw current manager Ross Standen take the helm early in November.
Javaun Splatt leads the goalscoring charts for The Hawks this season with 12 strikes in his 22 appearances.
