MILLERS GET THE JOB DONE
PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SE DIV
THREE BRIDGES 0 CRAY VALLEY (PM) 2 - 6 FEB 2024 - ATT 95
Goals: CV - Vigor 13, Ekpiteta 59
It was a tough evening at Jubilee Walk as both teams battled the wind and rain but it was a case of job done for the Millers as they took the three points back home and kept another clean sheet. Matty Vigor and Calvin Ekpiteta with the goals, one in each half, Max Ovenden with a fantastic one handed diving save towards the end providing the highlights.
In contrast to Saturdays game at Mertsham in which there were none this was a game in which there were 10 bookings, 5 from each side, a fiery bad tempered affair at times maybe but always difficult to know what came first, neither side making things easy for the officials, after early cautions set the tone. Bridges manager Jamie Crellin was particularly vocal from the bench as decisions seemingly went against his side.
Not long after the kick off both Adam Coombes and Vigor went close with shots the wrong side of the post. Valley took the lead in the 13th minute, Ekpiteta with the pass from out wide on the left to the feet of Vigor who turned in the box and fired past the keeper low into the bottom corner of the net.
The Bridges threatened as they looked for an equaliser but Valley held firm, on one ocassion throwing their bodies in the way as a series of shots were blocked and the lead maintained going into the break.
Following the re-start Barney Williams put in a dangerous looking cross with Vigor at the front post just failing to get the vital touch needed and the ball evading Ekpiteta at the far post. On 52 minutes the Bridges did find the back of the net from a Brannon O'Neil free kick right on the edge of the box out wide but the assistants flag was raised and ruled out for offside against Billy Irving. Just before the hour mark Ekpiteta increased Valley's lead, a low ball into the box was missed by both Coombes and the defender and found its way to Ekpiteta. He still had a lot to do and did well from an acute angle to fire back across the keeper into the far bottom corner of the net.
Valley keeper Ovenden produced an excellent one handed save diving to his right on 68 minutes to push away Noel Leighton's shot. He was forced into action again in added time making another good save this time from the head of Leighton from a corner. Prior to that at the other end shots from Lyle Della-Verde and Denzel Gayle just failed to hit the target.
Valley manager Steve McKimm was pleased with the result, grinding out their eleventh consecutive win on the road in the league this season and their ninth clean sheet. Next up two home games at the Artic Stadium starting this Saturday against Chichester City.
