MILLERS FORCED TO SETTLE FOR A POINT
PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SE DIV
CRAY VALLEY (PM) 1 HORNDEAN 1 - 30 JAN 2024 - ATT 125
Goals: CV - Waldren 67
H - Scutt 44
Such are the high standards set by Steve McKimm and his team this season, another draw at home looks on the face of it to be two points dropped and a missed opportunity. The reality is there are no easy games in this division and credit to Horndean who put their bodies on the line to gain their point. Michael Birmingham the Deans manager was delighted with his teams efforts and in fact is quoted in his post match interview as being over the moon with the result. They are scrapping for points in the bottom half of the table and with the Millers still holding onto their unbeaten tag, 21 games now, teams will inevitably see them as a big scalp.
The kick off was delayed by half a hour due to a number of Horndean players arriving late after being held up in traffic after an accident on the M25. Once finally underway the first half saw Valley have the majority of possession and I lost count of the number of corners. A couple of efforts on goal were saved on the line, one by the keepers boot but most were either blocked or off target. Connor Duffin for Horndean had hit the post from close range in their first real attack on ten minutes however it was from their first corner of the game on 44 minutes that they took the lead. A corner routine from the training ground, after receiving the ball back, a low ball drilled in by Jordan Pile found Tommy Scutt on the edge of the six yard box to fire home.
Valley thought they had equalised on 56 minutes when Danny Waldren converted Clem Asiedu's cross but the assistant's flag was raised for offside. Waldren then had a header from a corner cleared off the line. He wasn't to be denied though on 67 minutes when his header from another Barney Williams corner was adjudged to have crossed the line to square things up.
Valley weren't able to pile on the pressure as they would have hoped in search of a winner and didn't really trouble Cameron Scott in the Deans goal. Adam Coombes who replaced Marcel Barrington on the hour did have a penalty shout after appearing to be fouled shortly after the equaliser but nothing was given. in the end both teams had to settle for a point.
