WALDO'S LATE DOUBLE SILENCES CANNONS

PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SE DIV
CRAY VALLEY (PM) 2 HYTHE TOWN 0 - 23 MAR 2024 - ATT 226
GOALS CV - Waldren 79, 88

Report by Steve Chapman

Two late goals from experienced midfielder Danny Waldren silenced the Cannons and ensured that Valley remain a point ahead of Ramsgate in the race for the title.

Valley's best moment in the opening half was in the first minute when from a Barney Willliams corner kick, Waldren saw his header smash against the cross bar. Town threatened briefly but the Valley defence stayed firm with Max Ovenden called into action to punch clear a couple of corners. Clement Asiedu featured prominently with several dangerous looking crosses from out wide on the left but Valley were unable to take advantage and it remained goalless going into the break.

The game came to life in the 51st minute when the home side were awarded a penalty. Kyrell Lisbie was brought down by Town captain Liam Smith, who was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Lisbie himself took the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way but his shot missed the target. Numerous more chances came and went, a Lee header was headed off the line and Lisbie looked as if he must score after getting a touch, almost on the goal line, racing onto Ekpiteta's low cross but he could only deflect the ball the wrong side of the far post.

Despite playing the majority of the second half with 10 men, a resilient Hythe side held out until the 78th minute before Waldren finally broke the deadlock. Freddie Parker pulled the ball back from the byline and after pin balling around fell to Waldren who side footed his shot into the roof of the net from close range. It had been a while coming but was fully deserved with Valley very much on top throughout,

Waldren then completed his double in the 88th minute to secure the three points for Valley. A corner kick after initially being cleared was eventually played back into the box and Waldren finished from close range with a stooping header.
