SCENES - BENNETT’S LAST GASP WINNER

Wow. Just wow! Last second. Kiki crosses, Sonny heads back across goal. Far post Benno heads home. Scenes as The Millers dreams, hanging by a thread, are kept alive.
Barely time to re start as the referee blows for full time. The Millers, a mixture of joyous celebration and a sense of relief that only last gasp winners can bring. Unbelievable, football the game we love, delivers yet again. Manager Tommy Osborne walks past up the touchline and everyone wants to shake his hand in congratulations, a sliding doors moment had occurred, how different the walk off might have been.
Meanwhile joy and despair go in tandem and on the full time whistle The Vickers players slump to the ground. That second half performance had given them hope and a sense of deserving something out of the game. It had been snatched from them. As the dust settles and after the players had left the pitch, I look across and see Dave Joy their amiable long term secretary, left on his own, in quiet contemplation. Football can be a cruel game as well. They do though live to fight another day in their battle at the foot of the table to avoid a relegation play off. On Saturday they visit East Grinstead Town.
For The Millers it’s a winner takes all for a confirmed play off spot on Saturday against Sheppey United at the Artic Stadium. Just to make it interesting a draw might not be enough for either side with Hythe Town waiting in the wings.
Returning to tonight’s game, The Millers kicking towards the quaggy end, had dominated the first half and better finishing should have seen them go into the interval with more than just the one goal to show for their efforts. They attacked with pace and urgency, hitting the woodwork twice, shooting agonisingly just past the post and forcing a good save from Vickers keeper Jordan Gilmore. The one goal came in the 26th minute, Dan Bennett finishing well after good build up play. The Vickers did hit the outside of the post but it was The Millers very much on top.
Contrast that with the second half, only two minutes in Cem Tumkaya found himself the wrong side of the attacker and conceded a penalty. Muraino Banjoko converted from the spot for the equaliser. Thereafter it was The Vickers who looked more likely to score before the sensational ending.
