Valley kept up the pace on the front runners with this convincing win at the Artic Stadium.
On the front foot from the beginning, Adam Coombes went close to giving Tommy Osborne’s men the lead in the eighth minute – his strike from Denzel Gayle’s far post cross hitting the upright with Chats’ keeper Ben Bridle Card beaten.
But it wasn’t to be long before the deadlock was broken, as Gayle cut in from the right before receiving a return pass from Dan Bennett and sliding the ball home – despite efforts from defenders Simon Cooper and Dean Beckwith to clear the danger.
Hassan Ibrahiym and Bennett both had efforts denied by Bridle Card before Valley were awarded a penalty ten minutes before the interval.
After taking possession of Ibrahiym’s pass from the left, Bennett was upended in the box by Cooper – Coombes administering suitable punishment, firing his 10th goal of the season fiercely beyond the reach of Bridle Card.
Following two half time changes and a managerial blast, Chatham raised their tempo after the break, enjoying a spell of pressure on the Valley goal before the hosts reassumed control of proceedings.
Kershaney Samuels made progress down the right before feeding the ball to Ibrahiym – the resultant cross finding Coombes whose effort was pushed over for a corner by Bridle Card.
The game was however over as a contest shortly before the hour mark when Gayle – enjoying a scintillating run of form – cut in from the right before switching the ball onto his left foot and striking his second goal of the game.
Despite spells of pressure from the misfiring visitors, it took until stoppage time for Chris Lewington in the Valley goal to come under any real threat.
Impressive substitute Prince Domafriyie broke down the left, playing in Chats leading scorer Dan Bradshaw to slot wide from ten yards, before a low cross from Ike Orji was slid beyond Lewington by defender Cem Tumkaya to provide a consolation goal to take back down the A2.
