Connor Dymond's second half header from the corner is saved by the keeper
After a week of disruption following the departure of Manager Kevin Watson, Valley were worthy winners after a disciplined second half performance in West Sussex.
A first half low in quality and with few clear cut chances to either side, brought an interval reshuffle by new boss Tommy Osborne and his coaching staff that offered a greater structure to those on display, amidst a willingness to work hard for the cause.
Chichester, hitherto unbeaten at home in the league this season, were first to threaten – Valley goalkeeper Chris Lewington being called into action to deny Josh Clack after the striker homed in after collecting a long ball down the left, before needing to back peddle to tip over a long free kick from Connor Cody.
Dan Bennett had a shot saved by Chi keeper Kieron Magee after being set up by Barney Williams, before the custodian denied Denzel Gayle as he closed in following a through ball from Cemil Tumkaya, but clear opportunities were at a premium.
After switching to a back four however - with skipper Connor Dymond pushed further forward - , Valley took a hold on the game they were never to relinquish after the break.
Bennett missed a great opportunity, taking a second touch controlling a cross field pass by Dymond before being denied by Magee, but made no mistake on the hour – applying a clinical finish after picking up a through ball.
It then became a case of when, not if, Valley would extend the lead.
Dymond was denied by a combination of Magee and an upright when meeting a Bennett corner at the far post, before Chichester had a long spell of possession without making any progress – an impressive press by the hardworking Millers finding the ball eventually back at the feet of Magee, before it fell to Gayle, whose effort was saved for a corner.
Sonny Black’s back pass to Tumkaya brought a moment of consternation as the spinning ball caught out the tall centre back before he regained possession under pressure, before Black himself had a shot deflected for a corner at the other end.
The last rites however, were delivered in the dying minutes by Valley substitute Adam Coombes – the striker slotting under Magee after being set up by an audacious backheel from Kershaney Samuels on the Chi bye line.
