FAULTLESS VALLEY FAIL TO FIND A WAY THROUGH
PITCHING-IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE SE DIV
BECKENHAM TOWN 0 CRAY VALLEY (PM) 0 - 20th Sep 2022 - ATT 135
Report by Richard J Green
Valley manager Kevin Watson described his team’s performance as “faultless” as a combination of the woodwork and an “incredible” performance from Beckenham stand-in goalkeeper Baldwin Kaluya denied his team at Eden Park Avenue.
Coming into the game on the back of four consecutive league wins and a tremendous victory in the FA Cup at Dartford on Saturday, Becks had little answer to a display of attacking flair and creativity from the visitors that deserved more than a share of the points.
From the moment that Barney Williams’ 15 yard drive was pushed to safety by Kaluya in the second minute, Valley laid siege on the home goal with Denzel Gayle a constant threat.
Five goal striker Louie Theophanous had a 20 yard drive parried to safety by Chris Lewington in the 14th minute in what was a rare foray on the visitor’s goal, as Williams struck Kaluya’s upright after being set up by Ade Adeyemo just before the half hour.
The Beckenham goalkeeper denied efforts from Adeyemo and Gayle as the interval approached, while several efforts from range narrowly failed to hit the target.
Leading scorer Dan Bennett was denied by Kulaya within seconds of the restart before his powerful shot struck the bar after excellent interplay featuring Cem Tumkaya and Adeyemo.
Twelve minutes from time saw Kulaya apply the coup de gras however.
After blocking an effort from Bennett with the assistance of one of his colleagues, the Beckenham goalkeeper pulled off a magnificent save to deny Connor Dymond’s header from point blank range.
Well, if that didn’t beat him, it seemed that nothing would, and the cheers from the locals at the end said much of their relief to secure a point.
