We meet KIERON McCANN

We meet KIERON McCANN

David Carter14 Oct 2020 - 14:37

"Welcome Macca" interview by Richard J Green

Shortly after The Millers had secured a late point at Whyteleafe, we caught up with midfielder Kieron McCann, who joined the Club just in time to make his debut in the first league game of the season at Hastings United.
When asked where it all started for Kieron, a big grin came across his face, revealing those pearly white teeth. “D’you know what, it’s funny you saying that. It was actually here at Whyteleafe. I was 15/16 and I made my first team debut. I was originally at Croydon Athletic Academy as a college scholar, and it was against Croydon Athletic, who had loads of money at the time. We beat them 2-0 and I scored a header. I was at Whyteleafe for one or two seasons.
I’ve also played for Cray Wanderers, had a six week spell at Sittingbourne while I was coming back from injury, and had another spell at Croydon Athletic. I’ve also been with Erith and Belvedere, and Sevenoaks when Micky Collins was their manager”.
So how have injuries treated you over the years ? “Luckily, I’ve had no bad injuries during my career – four weeks is about the longest I’ve been out”.
Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley said you need to add goals to your game.
“Yea, as the years have gone on, I’ve lost the legs a little bit so I need to get in the box more and score more goals.”
And what are your career highlights (to date) ? “Hmmm, I don’t really think I’ve had any. I’ve only ever won one league – that was the Kent League with Erith and Belvedere in 2012/13. Erith & Belvedere were going for the league when Tony Russell was in charge at VCD.” What Macca didn’t add was that Erith & Belvedere needed to beat VCD’s result by five goals on the last day of the season. They won 7-1 !!
“There was also Billericay last year, or was it the year before ? When Glenn Tamplin was their Chairman – they had loads of money in them days. We beat them at home – I scored quite a good goal. The ball came out to me and I just smashed it !!” he recalls with relish.
“Billericay, Folkestone and Dulwich were competing for the League. Last game we drew 2-2 at Billericay – Jamie O’Hara scored putting them up. We lost in the Play-Offs”.
“After three years at Folkestone – when we were in the Play-Offs every year - I felt it was time for a change.”
So why’s everyone moving here from Folkestone these days ? “D’you know – I don’t know. I played under Kev at Chatham – there was me, Kalvin, Ade and Liam Hickey . With my work, and my Missis opening up a shop near the Club. My family are all from South East London – I was born in Catford. I moved out to Maidstone – Chatham way – so it’s only one road to the ground. Takes 26 minutes !!”
And what are the main differences between playing in the Premier and our League – is it the speed, fitness, the organisation ? “I wouldn’t say there’s much difference if I’m totally honest with you – I think only the top 3 or 4 in the Premier. Next season, we’ll be completely fine in the Premier.”

Cheers Macca !!
